The majestic river Volkhov – beautiful and deep – is one of the most valuable rivers in the European part of Russia. The ancient Russian cities – Veliky Novgorod, Volkhov, Kirishi, village Old Ladoga and newer settlements, for example, the city New Ladoga comfortably adjoin on it's coasts. The river Volkhov is rich with fish! It is real paradise for fans of fishing. You'll find crucian, small fry, pike, bleak, pike perch, ruff in pure waters of Volkhov. These regions attract fishermen from all corners of extensive Leningrad and Novgorod regions for a reason.

The fortress Old Ladoga stands on the river coast too. As it is specified in "the Tale of Bygone Years" Rurik with brothers Sineus and Truvor bult there the first, wooden fortress in 862.

The prince of Novgorod, and then Kiev, Oleg known as Prophetic began to build up a stone fortress. As it is specified in the Novgorod chronicle, he was then buried there. However, the Kiev historical diplomas challenge it, declaring that the tomb of the prince Oleg is in Kiev.

Subsequently fortress was destroyed. Restored in the 12th century, it was reconstructed, but kept all main lines of an Old Russian defensive construction. More than once its walls maintained an attacks and siege. The church having four internal piers devoted to Saint Georgy was built in memory of a multi-day, but unsuccessful siege of Ladoga by the Swedish troops which came by 55 ships in the territory of fortress. The ancient frescos dated the 12th century remained up to now in this cathedral of the premongolian period. The most known of them is called "St. Genus and the Dragon".

Eventually Ladoga lost the value as a border city. Construction of railway tracks brought to that, as the river Volkhov lost the transport appointment. Having remained away from rough reorganizations, Old Ladoga kept the sounding as the city with rich history, fighting glory and numerous orthodox shrines.

The Lyubshinsky ancient settlement once stood on the coast opposite to fortress. Nobody guessed its existence until at the end of the last century when archeologists came across the remains of fortifications. They discovered the ancient settlement outlines with the earth shaft strengthened by once calcareous plates with wooden fortifications in the top part. At excavation thousands of objects demonstrating development of crafts, commercial relations, ethnic origin of inhabitants of the Lyubshinsky ancient settlement were found.

The remains of stone fortress hid under themselves earlier tree - earthwork — an earth shaft with thick wooden paling. It is dated 7-8 centuries, the early Iron Age.
