Ancient New Year's traditions and our days
New Year began to be celebrated in Russia at the time of paganism. Our ancestors celebrated this day in the spring, at the time of awakening of the nature from a long winter dream. There is an assumption, that earlier Day of vernal equinox – March, 22, and later – March, 1 was considered as the New Year.
Later the holiday began to be celebrated in the fall – on September, 1, the orthodox tradition considered this day the moment of completion of the main works in fields and gardens. During Peter the Great reign the order, according to which new year began to be celebrated on January, 1, was issued. It happened in 1699.
The very first "winter" New year in Moscow was met by a parade and fireworks. By the way, the tradition to use fireworks is popular to this day, for example, any New Year's holiday on the recreation facility "Staroladozhskaya Dacha" located in the Volkhov district of the Leningrad Region can't be full without festive bright fireworks.
The 1700th year made this holiday annual secular tradition. At the same time people started to decorate fir-trees with fruit, nuts and candies. Peter the Great ordered to decorate trees "not worse than in Europe". And Christmas tree decorations appeared in Russia much later. The recreation facility "Staroladozhskaya Dacha" has magnificently decorated live New Year tree – the main attribute of a holiday. Dances around it are loved by both adults and children.
Also the tradition of a New Year's feast with a baked pig as a header dish– a symbol of wealth and abundance appeared. However, celebrating the coming 2019, astrologers do not recommend to put this dish on the table, because the symbol of the year is a Boar and it might be offended. But we'll have a lot of fruit, nuts, vegetables and sweets on a holiday table.
And of course no New year in Russia is possible without Christmas carols – children go to neighbor's houses, where they are treated with candies and other sweets. Today we still please little guests of our facility "Staroladozhskaya Dacha" with gifts/ And here it is even possible to invite the real Father Frost to give presents to your kids.
